About Food Banks Canada

Food Banks Canada (FBC) supports a unique network of over 4,700 food-related organizations in every province and territory that provides support to Canadians who visit food banks over 1.1 million times each month. Together, the network annually shares over 200 million pounds of essential safe, quality food; provides social programs that help to foster self-sufficiency and advocates for policy changes that will help create a Canada where no one goes hungry.

About the Role

The Manager, Sustainable Food Programs works closely and collaboratively with agricultural and agri-food industry partners, stakeholders, and the food bank network, in managing the development of national food acquisition programs. This role is responsible for managing Food Banks Canada’s food transformation efforts across Canada to provide access to on-going sustainable food sources with a focus on increasing the quality, quantity, and overall value of nutritious food shared with the network.

Note: This is a full-time, remote position available on a 12-month contract to start with the likelihood of an extended contract or permanent opportunity becoming available after the 12 months expires.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Develop and maintain innovative value-added partnerships with agriculture and agri-food sectors across Canada, including agricultural producer groups, growers, processors/packers/shippers etc., with the potential to expand to manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the food bank network and external stakeholders to develop and enable programs and partnerships that support access to a sustainable supply of nutritionally dense food for the network
  • Identify and develop strategic and sustainable paths to elevate and accelerate food transformation practices, enabling high quality surplus food to be “transformed” or converted into practical and nutritious food solutions for those in need
  • Develop surplus food acquisition strategies and partnerships required to maintain food transformation activities
Manage timelines and budgets related to the development of food acquisition programs
  • Lead communities of practice and working groups to share knowledge and best practices in an effort to maximize the ability of donors and food banks to successfully access and transform recovered surplus food
  • Develop and execute annual plans for the development of food acquisition programs in order to meet or exceed objectives
  • Maintain up-to-date reporting and metrics
  • Work collaboratively with multiple organizations within the food bank network to ensure a cohesive donor and program approach, eliminate duplication of efforts, and expand partnerships in order to “grow the pie” for food banks within the network
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Will Need

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant sales and/or fundraising experience, with a track record of successful results and the proven ability to build and maintain excellent customer/donor relationships
  • Familiarity with agricultural processes and practices
  • Experience working with and developing programs
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Problem solver with the ability to take initiative and be proactive
  • Partnership development and management
  • Project coordination and issue management skills; ability to effectively manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
